The flexibility of running my own business has always appealed to me because of the ability to shape its structure around my values. Because of this, I've decided to routinely support the organizations that shape my community in Jamaica Plain and the Greater Boston area. Together these groups support and uplift entire communities. They create safe spaces. They advocate and generate awareness on the local challenges we face. They collect and share research and data that moves for sustainable, legislative change. Welcome to the One-Day Watercolor Series! This is a series of five single-day classes that will guide beginners through the unique challenges of and techniques used in watercolor painting. You can take one class on a subject that's been tripping you up or you can sign up for a few of them to get a more in-depth introduction to the medium.

Below are descriptions of what to expect in each class. If you sign up for three or more classes, use code ONEDAY-10 for 10% off your tickets.

5:30-8:30pm on 11/6/2024
Class One: Your Materials
This class is for anyone completely new to watercolor that wants to learn how to shop for materials, try out some materials or get to know their current set of materials.
Together with the staff at C.C. Lowell, we’ll walk through the differences in watercolor paints, paper, brushes and accessories. Then we’ll work on some exercises that explore mark-making with your brushes and your color palette.

Class Two: Color Theory + Watercolor
This class is for people who want to go beyond using the paint straight from the tubes and achieve a more natural range of colors in their work.
We’ll go over some color theory basics and why it’s so important in this transparent medium. Our project for the class will be color mixing swatches and an abstract exercise.

Class Three: Washes + Water Control
This class is for people who feel like they always have too much water on the page and not enough control over the paint.
We’ll go over different types of watercolor washes and how to use them and some tips for managing the amount of water on your paper. We’ll put this knowledge together in a small landscape painting demo.

Class Four: Textures + Effects
This class is for people who have an understanding of washes and basic watercolor painting, but want to explore using other elements to create unique textures and effects. Also a great class if you want an introduction to masking fluid.
Some materials we’ll use for these effects are: salt, rubbing alcohol, sponges and masking fluid. We’ll also try out watercolor pencils and making different types of splatter marks on your page before painting a small nighttime landscape demo.

Class Five: Balancing a Composition
This class is for people who have an understanding of the basic watercolor techniques covered in this series, but want more guidance on creating depth and balance in their paintings.
We’ll go over how to create strong focal points by using a range of color vibrancy, value or transparency in your paint, and soft/hard edges to your marks. We’ll practice these techniques in a series of mini studies.
